- never turn the gas back on
- In a "Haywired" situation (major earthquake on Hayward fault) you could lose running water and gas for weeks to months
- Circuit breakers: turn small switches off first, then the main; turn on in reverse order
- keep important documents, IDs, etc. accessible
- family emergency plans, both for leaving & for sheltering in place
